At the Bethesda E3 Showcase, James Altman, Director of Publishing at Bethesda, and Robert Duffy, Chief Technology Officer at id Software, took the stage to announce the Orion SDK, technology built for developers to optimize game engines for cloud gaming.
“Orion is a tremendous breakthrough in streaming technology. It is our name for a group of patented technologies that optimize game engines for performance in a cloud environment. Orion can work with any game engine, and [it] will improve player experiences no matter which game you’re playing or whether or you’re streaming with Stadia, on xCloud, or another streaming platform.”James Altman, Director of Publishing at Bethesda
Robert Duffy continued, saying that the Orion is able to “stream game content up to 20% faster per frame” because it is incorporated at the game engine level, and that “an Orion-enabled game can stream with up to 40% lower bandwidth.”
ID and Bethesda will be opening up Orion for testing. You can sign up for a chance to test out Orion and stream Doom (2016) for free at the Doom Slayer’s Club. The test will necessitate an Apple device running iOS 11 or higher. Tests for PC and Android will be run later.
