Stadia Launch FAQ

Stadia Launch FAQ

There’s a fair amount of confusion surrounding the launch of Stadia. Who can play? When can you play? How can you play? We have all of your answers here, directly sourced from conversations with Google. Let’s dive in.

  1. How Can I Play Stadia on November 19th?
    • To play Stadia on November 19th, you’ll need to have a Stadia Pro subscription. To obtain Stadia Pro, you’ll need to have purchased the Founder’s Edition, Premiere Edition, or be gifted a Buddy Pass from someone else who purchased a Founder’s Edition. Stadia Pro is not yet available separately from these options.
  2. Do I need a Stadia controller to play at launch?
    • No. As long as you meet the above criteria, you can play Stadia at launch with a mouse and keyboard or an HID compliant controller, such as an Xbox One controller or DualShock 4.
  3. Do I have to plug in my Stadia controller?
    • The Stadia controller will work wirelessly with the Chromecast Ultra. At launch, the Stadia controller will need to be plugged into all other methods of play. A cable is included with the controller. In the future, the Stadia controller will work wirelessly with other devices, such as your phone.
  4. Do I need a Chromecast Ultra to play at launch?
    • No. As long as you are a Pro subscriber, you can play Stadia in a chrome browser on a computer, on a Pixel phone (second through fourth generations), or a Pixel Slate.
  5. When can I play Stadia if I’m not a Pro subscriber?
    • You can play Stadia Base when it launches next year. Google has not yet announced an exact launch date for Stadia Base.
